What to look out for in 2017

Many of the projects we have covered over the past few months are set to open for play in 2017, so as 2016 draws to a close, we thought we’d give you a rundown of new courses to look out for in the new year.

Sand Valley – Coore & Crenshaw

The first Sand Valley course, designed by architects Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, is scheduled to open fully in 2017, having already hosted some preview play. Mike Keiser’s Wisconsin resort is one of the most exciting multi-course projects in the US, and the second course, designed by David McLay Kidd, is also progressing well.

Stoatin Brae – Renaissance Golf Design

The sixth course at the Gull Lake View Resort in Michigan, US, has already had a 12 hole preview in 2016, and the full course is to open in 2017. The design has been led by a number of senior associates at Renaissance Golf Design, such as Eric Iverson, Brian Schneider, Don Placek and Brian Slawnik.

Ardfin – Bob Harrison

Australian architect Bob Harrison’s design on the Scottish island of Jura is scheduled to open in spring/summer of 2017. Located on the Ardfin estate on the island’s southern side, the course featured in issue 43 of GCA, and the mix of beautiful scenery and challenging play is eagerly anticipated.

GC Herzogswalde – Christian Althaus

Nine new holes are being built at the GC Herzogswalde near Dresden, Germany. The holes, which have been designed by German architect Christian Althaus and constructed by Josef Pötter Golf, will open in early 2017. A full on-site visit to the course will be reported on in issue 47 of GCA, which will be available in January 2017.

Maridoe Golf Club – Steve Smyers

This new track is scheduled to open in 2017 in the Dallas suburb of Carrollton. The 214-acre site features a number of distinct water features and plays around a lake, with golfers having to negotiate hazards on many of the holes.

Panorama Golf Resort - Michael Terech

This new course near Kacov in the Czech Republic is expected to fully open next year following a successful soft opening this summer. The 27-hole course has been led by a team from Golfer.eu, with architect Michael Terech at the helm.

The Summit – Tom Fazio

With views of the Las Vegas strip on one side and the nearby mountains on the other, The Summit was described as being ‘unlike anything in the Las Vegas market’ by Fazio Design’s Brian Courcelle when we interviewed him in November 2016. The full course is scheduled to open in the early part of next year.

Streamsong Black – Gil Hanse

The third course at the Streamsong Resort in Florida is taking shape, and is set to open for play in autumn 2017. Designed by Gil Hanse, Streamsong Black is being constructed on a sandy site and once open, will complement the existing Streamsong Red and Streamsong Blue tracks.

Be sure to continue visiting our site for the latest on each of these projects in the new year, as well as coverage of all the renovation and redesign work taking place around the world. You can also subscribe to our printed magazine here.

From everyone at GCA, here’s to a happy, healthy and prosperous 2017!
