Tyler Rae to begin bunker renovation at Woodland this spring

Golf architect Tyler Rae will begin a renovation project this spring at Woodland Golf Club in the outskirts of Boston, USA.

Bunkers will be completely renovated and greens will be expanded. On the third hole, a new green will be built.

“The bunker infrastructure is 20 plus years old,” said Rae. “The sand is contaminated with rocks and pea gravel, bunker edges are collapsing, the classic shapes have changed over time, and there is a large amount of sand build-up on green side bunker edges.”

Construction will start on 15 April and is expected to finish on 1 July. The course will remain open throughout.

“The project is mainly a renovation of existing features and we’ll be altering their current sand-flashed, saucer-shaped bunker style,” said Rae. “I’ll be incorporating a very early Donald Ross period style grass-faced bunker look. More rugged and antiquated to fit in naturally with the local Boston terrain.”

Ross worked with Alex Findlay to extend the original nine-hole layout to a full 18 in 1903.

Rae said: “I’m looking forward to working on the new third green as well as some of the spectacular changes in the bunkering for various holes and getting a more classic look back to the property.”

Construction work will be handled by MAS Golf Construction, with Rae doing all of the shaping and detail finishing on greens and bunkers.
