Trump looking to add Crandon Park Golf Course to national portfolio

Details have emerged of an unsolicited proposal from Donald Trump to the Miami-Dade County to add the Crandon Park Golf Course to his national portfolio of courses.

The proposal includes plans to invest US$10 million to carry out renovations in return for a 99-year lease for its management and operation.

Located in Key Biscayne, Florida, the course at Crandon Park was originally designed by Bruce Devlin and Robert von Hagge and was built in 1972.

The proposal was submitted in July 2014, but details have only come to light this month and were first reported by the Miami Herald newspaper.

An excerpt from Donald Trump’s letter to Jack Kardys, director of Miami-Dade County Parks Recreation and Open Spaces, reads: ‘I believe that the Crandon golf course represents a great public-private opportunity for both you and us. As we have done time and again, we will make you proud of what we can accomplish.’

The letter continues: ‘We are very familiar with public projects and the addition of Crandon would be a natural fit to our growing golf portfolio, especially in the great state of Florida. In fact, we are in a perfect position to ensure that not only will this great asset be put into excellent condition, but that golfers from near and far will get to enjoy a first-class golfing experience for many years to come.’

Trump purchased the nearby Doral Golf Resort & Spa in 2011, renaming it the Trump National Doral Miami. Trump Golf also owns and operates the Trump National Jupiter and the Trump International Golf Club in the state of Florida.

A public hearing on Trump’s proposal is likely to take place in March, with Jack Kardys saying in a statement: ‘There are many steps in the process.’
