The Shire London opens new short game area

The Shire London in Barnet, England, has opened a new short game area designed by Dye Designs.

In development since August 2018, its construction has been overseen by golf constructor Nigel Ely, who has worked closely with Cynthia Dye McGarey and Matt McGarey, to provide an area for practice on Tour-standard greens.

Golfers can practice a variety of shots over the 750 square-metre area: uphill, downhill, lob and pitch shots from five stations up to 60 yards, with the eighteenth hole of the club’s Masters course providing a backdrop.

Ecobunker has installed a 65 square-metre practice bunker lined with Capillary Concrete and an artificial rivet wall. Greens have been grassed with Pure Distinction bentgrass, which has also been interseeded onto the greens on the Masters course.

“Introducing the new short game area to our golf club is exactly what we needed to take our facilities to the next level,” said Ceri Menai-Davis, director of The Bridgedown Group, which owns the club. “Offering not only a large putting, chipping and pitching area, but to provide our members and guests with such high-quality grass and bunkers, is superb and we are extremely proud. As soon as we have interseeded the greens on our Masters course for the second time this year in August, our golf club will be one of the best, if not the best conditioned in Greater London.”
