Strong progress being made at Vestavia CC as new holes take shape

A project to rework the golf course at Vestavia Country Club in Birmingham, Alabama, is progressing well.

The Vestavia CC course was originally designed by George Cobb in the early 1950s.

Architect Lester George is leading the project, and ground was broken at Vestavia earlier this year.

Ten of the course’s 18 holes are to be completely rebuilt, with the third, fourth, fifth, seventh, tenth, eleventh, thirteenth, fourteenth, fifteenth and eighteenth holes all being reworked as part of the project. Greens, fairways are also being renovated across all 18 holes.

Landscapes Unlimited is leading the construction element of the work, and the Better Billy Bunker construction method is being used on the course’s bunkering.

“There were a number of factors that dictated creating new holes,” said George. “Enhanced playability, strategy, safety, and facility changes were the main reasons, but this renovation offered an opportunity to create something new and unique to the area. I wanted to build something very special for these members.”

The project’s construction phase will continue until October, after which grass will be given time to grow in. That phase is expected to be complete by spring 2018.

“The goal of our project was to create the best product that suited the needs of our members,” said Alan Coshatt, long-range planning chairman at Vestavia CC. “Lester saw more potential in our course than probably anyone at our club, and now that grass is hitting the ground his vision is becoming very evident. It’s wide, fun, fair, and still a challenge for all levels of play. And the best part is it’s sitting on one of the most beautiful pieces of property in our region! We have created something truly spectacular.”
