Strand Golf Resort hires Johan Benestam for renovation project
The new owners of Strand Golf Resort, which is located about 100km west of Stockholm, Sweden, have selected golf course architect Johan Benestam to renovate their 18-hole golf course.
The project will include the rebuilding of the course’s green complexes and the development of a long-term bunkering plan. Drainage will be improved, and the teeing areas will be resurfaced.
Nick and Anna Potter took over the club in 2017. Their aim is to improve the course, which is set among rolling farmland and forest, to a standard that matches the level of its hotel and restaurant. They hope to transform Strand into one of Sweden’s leading golf package destinations and an exceptional golf facility for its members.
“We are really excited to partner with Johan,” said Nick Potter. “His ability and reputation to successfully integrate the golf course development with the existing landscape and the creativity he has demonstrated through his previous work made it an easy choice when selecting an architect. Johan has shown a real understanding not only towards our brief, though future factors such as the ability to successfully maintain the course both to a high standard and within budget.”
Benestam, whose previous work includes the renovation of Royal Drottningholm in Stockholm, says: “The course has huge potential with such a lovely setting so close to the Lake Mälaren. The landscape is adorable and features many mature oak trees. The course has interesting elevation changes, which will help create a magnificent golf experience for members and guests. I am really excited and looking forward to developing the course and working with the team at Strand.”
The course was originally designed by the club’s professional, Janne Kjellwall, in 1999. “I am really excited about the planned development,” said Kjellwall. “Strand is close to my heart as the original architect and club pro. I can see the new direction we are moving as a club and having the chance to have Johan Benestam come on board will take the club and especially the course, to another level. It’s an exciting time to be involved at Strand.”
