Staples plans ‘innovative solution’ for PGA National

PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, has hired Staples Golf Design for a ‘reimagination’ of its Squire course.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with the new ownership of PGA National on the Squire course,” said Staples. “I’ve watched tournaments on this property since I was a kid, so it’s a real honour to be working here.”

Canadian firm Brookfield Asset Management, and its Thayer Lodging Group subsidiary, purchased the resort from previous owners Walton Street Capital for nearly $218 million in late 2018.

The resort is home to five courses, including the Champion, which has hosted the Honda Classic on the PGA Tour since 2007.

At 6,447 yards from the back tees, the Squire course – named after Gene Sarazen – is currently the shortest at the resort. It was originally laid out by George and Tom Fazio and has not been significantly redesigned since opening in 1981.

“We’ll be coming up with an innovative solution that addresses golf’s future, and that’s really exciting,” said Staples. “You’re going to want to keep an eye on this project.”
