Series of enhancements planned for University Club of Milwaukee

Golf course architect Andy Staples has been hired as the consulting course architect by the University Club of Milwaukee as it begins plans for a series of capital improvement projects.

Located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the club was formerly known as the Tripoli Country Club and is home to a course originally designed by Tom Bendelow.

The planning phase of the forthcoming project has begun, with member outreach meetings and property assessments scheduled. Once these have taken place, the club will be able to outline a series of capital improvement projects, which will be introduced over a number of years.

Planned additions to the club include a new practice facility featuring multiple short game areas, a wedge range, a short course, and an indoor learning centre.

Staples grew up in Wisconsin and played the University Club of Milwaukee course in his youth.

“The University Club has a wonderful piece of land, and great documentation of the original course,” he said.  “Our plan will be to engage in dialogue with the members, and route a path that best fits their needs. The course still has many of the classic Bendelow features, including 16 original greens, they just need to be showcased in better, more sustainable ways.”

Staples will work closely with club staff, including superintendent Terry Conway, to carry out research and planning for the work. These will cover the course’s drainage, bunkering, the health of the trees, and look at how best to accommodate family play.

It is hoped that once the phased project is completed, the course’s strategy and sustainability will have been enhanced, and forward sets of tees for children and beginners will have introduced.

Staples added: “I think what the club is doing is right in line with how other successful club across the country are addressing their needs, and I’m certain this plan will exceed everyone’s expectations.”
