Second phase of bunker renovation work completed at Huddersfield GC
The second phase of bunker renovation project at Huddersfield Golf Club in Yorkshire, UK, has reached its conclusion.
A team from Swan Golf Designs is leading the project on the course, which was originally designed by Tom Dunn in 1891.
Since then, revered figures such as Alex ‘Sandy’ Herd and Alister MacKenzie have left their architectural imprint on the course, but the course is perhaps best known for its range of bunkers designed by Herbert Fowler.
The project team is aiming to reinstate the course’s moorland layout by reworking bunkers to give them more of a Fowler-like appearance.
The Swan teamed is working alongside course manager Ben Turner and golf course contractor Profusion Environmental to carry out the project, which has to date covered 33 bunkers.
16 more bunkers will be worked on as part of the project’s final phase, which is set to commence later this year.
The club will benefit from modern, maintenance-reducing construction specifications the bunkers are being built with.
As well as the work on the bunkers, Swan Golf Designs is adding a number of new tees, working on green surrounds, and carrying out selective tree and scrub removal.
“As the official home of Yorkshire golf Huddersfield Golf Club is well known to golfers throughout the north of England and a regular host of regional and national events,” said William Swan. “The course ticks all the boxes in terms of the challenge and variety it offers, with the added benefit of tremendous views from its elevated position atop the West Yorkshire moors. It is a privilege to have the opportunity to work on such a layout, helping the club restore some of the fine architectural features lost over the last few decades.”
