Ron Kern leads bunker remodeling project at Pebble Brook’s North Course

Golf course architect Ron Kern is leading a bunker remodeling project at the North Course at Pebble Brook Golf Club in Noblesville, Indiana.

Kern is working alongside golf course shaper Derek Dirksen on the project, with the shaping element of the work now complete.

The North Course at Pebble Brook was originally designed by Kern and his father, Gary.

“Today, the bunkers on the golf course are in need of attention after nearly thirty years of play,” said Ron Kern. “They have lost much of their original character of grass faced mounds forming the bunkers. So, we are embarking on a plan to remodel the bunkers to ensure their viability for another thirty years.”

Kern has drawn up a design that eliminates the cape and bay designs of the bunkering, helping to create bunkers with simpler shaping and grass faces.

Staff at the club prepared the bunker areas for rototilling and minor excavation work, with Dirksen then working on the shaping aspects.

Kern added: “The new bunkers meld into their surroundings and existing grade giving them a natural appearance, making the North Course at Pebble Brook feel as if it is more from the golden age of golf course design, rather than a contemporary golf course.”

Work will be continuing on the course into the new year.
