Robert McNeil reworks bunkering at two courses on Cape Cod

Golf course architect Robert McNeil is carrying out a major bunkering renovation at two municipal courses on Cape Cod in the US state of Massachusetts.

The architect has been hired to complete work on two courses in the town of Dennis – Dennis Highlands and Dennis Pines. The Dennis Pines course is a Henry C. Mitchell design and opened in 1966, while Dennis Highlands was designed by Jack Kidwell and Mike Hurdzan and opened back in 1984.

McNeil has looked to rework the bunkering on both courses to help enhance speed of play, maintainability and strategy.

The work has been divided into four phases, each focused on nine holes. Work on the front and back nines of the Dennis Pines course has been completed, as is the work on the back nine of the Dennis Highlands course.

McNeil’s focus will now shift to the project’s final phase, which will take place on the front nine at Dennis Highlands.

Other elements of the project include the creation of a new forward tee system for both courses to enhance enjoyability for beginners and juniors. The Dennis Pines course, when played from the forward tees, measures just over 4,000 yards.

“The Dennis Pines Golf Course has seen such a positive response to the recent renovations designed by Robert McNeil of Northeast Golf Company,” said Michael Cummings, director of golf at Dennis Golf, which owns the two courses. “Already a beautiful championship golf course, Rob’s vision of making the course more player-friendly while keeping the overall appeal of still being a challenging round hit a home run. The number of rounds played at Dennis Pines since the renovation completion has increased and continues to garner interest from locals and visitors to Cape Cod alike.”
