Renovations coming to West Course at TPC Kuala Lumpur this November

The West Course at TPC Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia is to undergo a series of renovations.

The course is the current host of the PGA Tour’s CIMB Classic, and the renovations are therefore being jointly overseen by the PGA Tour and golf course architect Ted Parslow of Parslow & Winter Golf Design.

The West Course has hosted seven Malaysian Opens and five CIMB Classics since it was last closed for refurbishments nearly a decade ago.

“Since the West Course will be closed, we will fully use this opportunity to resurface the grass on all West Course greens with Tifeagle bermudagrass,” said Steven Thielke, chief executive officer at TPC Kuala Lumpur. “The fairways and tee boxes will be resurfaced with Celebration Bermuda grass.”

Parslow and the project team will add length to selected holes, as well as making modification to bunkers and fairways.

Selected greens will be reworked so the contour is appropriate for the higher green speeds achieved with the Tifeagle surfaces.

Atlas Turf International is the firm supplying the new Celebration TifEagle bermudagrass.

“The competitive modifications to the West Course will enhance the original design strategy off the tee by repositioning and adding fairway bunkers and adding a few tees,” said Stephen Wenzloff, vice president of design services, Player Liaison with the PGA Tour. “Approach shot strategy will be enhanced by softening some slopes on greens to create new hole locations. The modifications will benefit both the Tour players as well as the members and guests. The West Course at TPC Kuala Lumpur will continue to solidify its position as one of the top courses in Asia and a player favorite on the PGA Tour.”

The project is set to commence this November following the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia tournament at TPC Kuala Lumpur.
