Rees Jones completes bunker renovation at Griffin Gate Golf Club
Rees Jones has completed a bunker renovation at the course at Griffin Gate Golf Club.
The project saw the architect return to the course in Lexington, Kentucky, which he originally designed back in 1981.
The club spend in the region of US$1 million to complete and saw Jones use the Better Billy Bunker Method across the course.
Work was carried out on 80 bunkers across the course, with the overall bunker coverage at Griffin Gate now reduced from 133,000 sq ft to 80,000 sq ft.
“It has been a rewarding experience upgrading Griffin Gate,” said Jones. “The Rees Jones team, led by Bryce Swanson, and Marriott Golf have brought the golf course into the 21st Century. The ‘refreshed,’ more diversified layout enhances every level of player’s golf experience by providing new challenges each round.”
The renovation project has also included the refinement of areas around the greens, redefined fairway lines, and new chipping areas to provide more varied challenges for players.
“This bunker renovation allows us to create more consistent playing conditions for our members and guests,” said Donald Hobbs, director of Golf at Griffin Gate Golf Club. “As a result, we will greatly enhance a golf course already known for its competitive play, beauty and environmentally friendly appeal.”
