Ponte Vedra hires Bobby Weed to renovate Ocean course
Bobby Weed Golf Design has been hired to renovate the Ocean course at Ponte Vedra Inn & Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
It will be Weed’s second major project at the 1928 Herbert Strong design, having completed the first in 1998, which “returned the layout’s bold contours, brawny bunkering and wind-swept character,” according to the design firm. Weed also renovated the club’s Lagoon course in 2007.
“For this new restoration, we intend to dramatically and comprehensively update every aspect of the layout, preparing it for the next generation of members and resort guests,” said Weed.
The work will address greens, tees, bunkers, irrigation, drainage, grassing, bridges, bulkheads and landscaping. “The windswept character of the course will be enhanced, and it is expected that the practice facilities will be improved,” said the firm.
The Ocean course – which includes one of golf’s earliest examples of an island green at the par-three ninth – was selected to host the 1939 Ryder Cup, but the matches were cancelled due to the onset of World War II.
The course will be closed for eleven months from August, while construction work is carried out.
