Peter Fjällman redesigns six greens at Gullbringa
Golf course architect Peter Fjällman is redesigning six greens on the Blue course at Gullbringa Golf & Country Club, located north of Gothenburg in Sweden.
Gullbringa has 27 holes, comprising three nines (Blue, Red and Yellow). Fjällman’s work on the Blue course is focusing on the first six greens.
“These six greens were the original push-up ones from the late 1960s and were long overdue an upgrade,” said Fjällman. “We started on 9 November, but we have managed to make all the green areas ready in just three weeks; with the base layer of the green, surrounds with mounds and runoffs, and greenside bunkers.
“Hopefully with a mild winter we will continue with the instalment of drainage pipes, drainage gravel and rootzone mix, all to USGA specification.”
Seeding is expected to begin by May 2021 so the greens can be playable by the end of summer 2021.
“The new greens are located more or less on the same spots as before, so there will be a feeling of recognition for the players,” said Fjällman. “However, the green areas will be completely different and there will be new challenges for the shot into the green, considering the bunkers’ locations, undulations on the greens and the various hills. That is what I was striving for… making it more challenging and interesting. Hopefully, the players will find it more fun to play on the new greens and put a smile on their faces.”
Future work may include some new fairway bunkers to fit in with the strategy of the redesigned greens.
