Olympic and Lake Merced both hire Hanse for masterplanning exercise

Olympic Club and Lake Merced in San Francisco have hired Hanse Golf Course Design for renovation projects, according to a report from golf website The Fried Egg.

Olympic’s Lake course, already the venue for five US Opens and three US Amateur, has another Amateur, the US Women’s Open, a PGA Championship and a Ryder Cup booked in over the next thirteen years. In an email to members, the club said: “The master plan is intended to enhance the day-to-day member golf experience for generations to come, while also ensuring that our iconic courses are positioned to perform and recover as we navigate a busy championship schedule leading up to, and beyond, the 2032 Ryder Cup.” Gil Hanse will begin consulting with members over the summer, and start work on a plan in autumn 2020.

Meanwhile at Lake Merced, redesigned by Alister MacKenzie in the late 1920s, Hanse will visit the club from late 2020 with members expected to vote on his plans in the first half of 2021. It is believed that an update of the club’s irrigation system is top priority, with bunkers and the driving range also areas of focus.
