Next phase of Royal Blackheath bunkering work to begin this summer

A project aiming to rework the bunkering at Royal Blackheath Golf Club in London, UK, is to continue this summer, with a view to completing all work in 2017.

Architect Ken Moodie of Creative Golf Design is leading the second phase of the work, having completed the first phase of the project in 2014.

Golf construction company MJ Abbott is also involved, working alongside Moodie and staff at the club to reinvent selected bunkers at the club.

All of the bunkers on the course are either being remodelled or repositioned as part of the project.

A number of tees are also being rebuilt, while the green on the sixteeenth hole will also be rebuilt. Some of the other putting surfaces are also being extended to enable some more interesting pin positions.

“The Woodland Management scheme is a key part of the project and a large number of inappropriate species have been removed, in consultation with John Nicholson of John Nicholson Associates,” said Moodie. “This is to transform the golf course into a more appropriate parkland landscape in keeping with the original course design and the setting of the fine seventeenth century hunting lodge which forms the clubhouse.”

The next phase of the project will kick off this August, with work being carried out over a period of five weeks.

The final elements of the bunker work will take place next summer.
