New Magnolia Green Golf Club course to open for play 2 June

A new 18-hole golf course will open for play on 2 June at the Magnolia Green Golf Club in Moseley, Virginia.

The course has been developed by Nicklaus Design in association with Tom Clark of the Ault, Clark & Associates firm.

The new course is a par-72, 7,150-yard layout and is an expansion of the former nine-hole Westham Golf Club, which opened back in 2010.

Nine new holes have now been added to the course, with expansion work overseen by Chris Cochran, a senior Nicklaus Design associate.

Cochran helped to ensure the new nine holes – which include bermudagrass fairways and bentgrass putting surfaces – blend with the site’s existing nine holes.

“We developed a fresh strategy for each hole while massaging what was already there,” Cochran said. “We kept the course’s basic routing the same, but worked on design features like yardages to create more variety and excitement.”

Course highlights include a reverse Redan-style, par-three third hole and a long par-four finishing hole that features an elevated green which is defended by a water hazard.

The course will be managed by Billy Casper Golf and forms part of the Magnolia Green residential development.

The Magnolia Green course will become only the second 18-holer to open for play in Virginia since 2010.

“Magnolia Green has more of the look and feel of a course in the Carolinas, making it unique to the Richmond market,” said Bobby Kidder, general manager of Magnolia Green Golf Club. “It’s a strategic, second-shot golf course with wide fairways, short rough and sloping greens.”
