New course to be built at the Island Resort & Casino

A new golf course is to be built at the Island Resort & Casino in Harris, Michigan.

Already home to the Paul Albanese-designed Sweetgrass Golf Club, the new course will be the second at the resort, which is owned and operated by the Hannahville Indian Community.

Albanese has been rehired by the resort to design and oversee the new 18-hole course, which will be built on a hilly site around six miles from the main resort.

Many of the holes will play through trees, and each nine will include a drivable par four. The rest of the course will be comprised of a mix of long and short par three and four hole.

A principal of the Albanese & Lutzke firm, Paul Albanese identified a drumlin – a long, sloping ridge – as the site’s most interesting feature.

“The drumlin climbs 100 to 120 feet in some areas,” he said. “The goal is to allow golfers to experience the drumlin throughout the entire course. It comes into play several times, in different directions; up, down, over and through. We are very happy with how the routing came out. We are really excited; I can't see how it won't be one of the top courses in Michigan.”
