New course set to be developed on Kangaroo Island
The developers of a proposed new golf course on Australia’s Kangaroo Island are hoping to have final approval for plans within the next eight weeks.
Developer Programmed Turnpoint is behind the project. The firm was recently involved in the development of the Cape Wickham Golf Course in Tasmania, which was designed by Mike DeVries.
Kangaroo Island lies off the coast of South Australia, around 70 miles southwest of the city of Adelaide.
Greg Norman’s firm has been reportedly approached to design the course, which will be home to 18-holes and located on a 220-hectare site on the island’s Dudley Peninsula.
Programmed Turnpoint’s general manager Justin Trott told The Lead: “With this golf course being located on the coast in a remote area its got the ‘sizzle’ to becoming immediately attractive to the market Playing golf while overlooking the sea, the drama of the sand dunes – it really will be something to behold.”
Trott added: “We are in the very early stages of speaking to golf courses designers, including Greg Norman and we will be looking at some plans in the immediate future. We have completed the public consultation period and spoken to cultural heritage representatives. We are now in the process of preparing our responses to those discussions.”
Plans for the site include the construction of a purpose built dam, which would help supply water from the nearby Middle River to the course throughout the year.
The course is likely to boost tourism on the island, with the Kangaroo Island Council predicted a potential 22,000 more annual visits and added annual revenue of around AUS$7 million.
