Long Cove reopens following restoration of Pete Dye’s design intent
The golf course at Long Cove Club in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, reopened for play in October following a project to restore Pete Dye’s original design intent, overseen by golf course architect and long-time Dye associate Bobby Weed.
As referenced in our coverage of the project when construction began, Weed said: “Long Cove was my first assignment with Pete and the genesis of Bobby Weed Golf Design. After having met him at Amelia Island Plantation in the mid-70s, Long Cove was the beginning of my career in design and construction and of my nearly 40 years relationship with Pete. To be back at Long Cove is very special for Bobby Weed Golf Design and to me personally.”
Work at Long Cove Club, which originally opened in 1981, has included restoring all bunkers and native waste areas to their original limits with new drain lines, sand and coquina shell material.
Greens and fairways have been regressed with updated turf varieties, and to reflect the original colour and texture contrast between rough and fairways. TifEagle ultradwarf bermuda has been used on fairways and Celebration bermuda on greens.
Wood bulkheads have been reconstructed, recreating the irregular lines and rustic nature of the original design. Cart paths have been repaired and overlaid, and some tree removal has taken place, with a return to the original palette of native landscaping.
MacCurrach Golf Construction began construction work in April 2018 and the course reopened on 1 October.
