Lobb + Partners plan long-term project at Waterton Lakes

Lakeland Golf Management has selected Lobb + Partners for a long-term project on the Waterton Lakes golf course in Alberta, Canada.

Nine holes of the Parks Canada-owned course were originally laid out in 1922 by William Thomson, the head professional at Banff Springs’ original course, with a second nine added in the 1930s. Stanley Thompson advised the club and created a plan after the course became 18 holes, with his course changes continuing to be made even after his death in 1953.

Parks Canada has now awarded Lakeland Golf Management the lease to operate Waterton Lakes for the next 25 years. The management company already operates nine golf courses in western Canada.

Lobb + Partners is planning to enhance the course’s connection with the surrounding natural landscape and to educate golfers on the importance of protecting and respecting the rare flora and fauna the area has.

“Our team’s approach to intelligent design and sustainability strives to maximise the positive impacts Waterton Lakes golf course can have on its social and environmental surroundings,” said Alex Hay, design associate at Lobb + Partners. “We believe when managed properly, golf courses provide many positive benefits to local environments and wider communities. A sustainable approach was part of golf in the beginning, and it must be part of golf in the future. We look forward to working with Lakeland Golf Management on this exciting project.”
