Hansen, Fjällman and Himmel appointed for Golf Club Sylt redesign
Golf course architects Rolf Stephan Hansen, Peter Fjällman and Thomas Himmel have been appointed to lead a redesign of the course at Golf Club Sylt in Northern Germany.
Work will commence in spring 2017 on the project’s first phase, which will focus on the course’s first nine holes.
Originally opened back in 1989 and designed by Donald Harradine, the course lies on the island of Sylt off Germany’s western coastline – close to the border with Denmark.
The club has purchased an adjacent area of land, which will be used during the project to build four new holes to help enhance the course’s routing.
“The aim of the redesign is not only to improve the overall quality of the golf course but also to strengthen the playing values and adapt the golf course to the specific nature which is characteristic of the island,” said Rolf Stephan Hansen. “Thomas Himmel won an architect competition regarding the redesign of the golf course some years ago and as my design proposal for three new holes on the short hole course were approved by the golf club and later on construction of those golf holes were supervised by Peter Fjällman, it felt right that we three now are working together on the forthcoming redesign on the 18-hole course.”
Construction of the four new holes will be the first element of the project to take place, with work also taking place on a couple of green areas.
The remaining green areas will be constructed in autumn 2017, and the final nine holes will be redesigned in 2018.
