Gary Browning to lead restoration of Kananaskis Country Golf Course

Gary Browning has been selected as the architect to lead a restoration project at the Kananaskis Country Golf Course in the Canadian province of Alberta.

Kananaskis Country Golf Course is comprised of two 18-hole courses – the Mt Lorette and Mt Kidd courses – both of which were originally designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr.

GCA reported back in July 2014 that the project had been given the green light, and the Government of Alberta is committing CAD$18 million to help bring the course back to its former glory following severe flood damage in the summer of 2013.

Of his selection as lead architect for the restoration project, Gary Browning said: “I am honoured to have been entrusted with the task of recreating world-class golf in such an environmentally sensitive and truly magnificent and beautiful alpine setting. Helping to return these golf treasures – that most everyone had given up for lost – is my career coupe de grace.”

Browning, who has worked on a number of projects in Alberta during his career, has said he will stay true to the original architect’s plans, while also helping to improve the course using contemporary practices that were not available when the course was first developed. These include improved agronomic insights and adjusted landing area and hazard locations to account for modern play.

“We are thrilled to have Gary Browning lead the restoration of these two golf course gems,” said Darren Robinson, Kananaskis Country Golf Course general manager. “His design philosophy ensures the enhancements will recreate their timeless look and feel while contributing to a unique and memorable player experience.”
