Five year redevelopment aims to transform Strandhill links

Strandhill Golf Club in County Sligo has kicked off a five year redevelopment plan that aims to make the course one of the best in the north-west of Ireland.

Phase one will begin in February 2016 and involves a brand new bunker scheme. “The holes will be given a more strategic flavour and the bunkers themselves built in a visually attractive style,” said Dublin-based Scottish architect Ally McIntosh, who has been hired to oversee the works.

Phase 2 will potentially see the introduction of some new holes and the realigning and resequencing of the existing routing. “Much of this phase will be dependent on the club working closely with the environmental bodies in obtaining the necessary permits and management plan for the impressive dunes that the course sits upon,” said McIntosh.

McIntosh has recently completed the new Kilmore nine at Carne Golf Links in County Mayo. He is keen to emphasise the low key and sensitive approach that will be taken during the project. “Safety concerns both internal and external to the course have made this redevelopment a necessity” he said. “But it provides a wonderful opportunity to enhance what is one of the best kept secrets in Irish golf. Some of the existing holes are laid upon the most fascinating natural landscape and it is important that we use the lightest of touches in ensuring the new work follows that same pattern.”

The hope of the club is that once the development is complete, it will attract increased tourism to Sligo.
