Coore and Crenshaw to lead major project at Kapalua Golf next year

The Plantation course at Kapalua Golf is to undergo a multi-million dollar enhancement project led by original architects Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw.

Set to take place in 2019 at the resort on the Hawaiian island of Maui, the project will include the resurfacing of all greens with Tif Eagle bermudagrass. The tees, fairways and roughs will be regrassed with Celebration bermudagrass.

Every bunker on the course will be renovated, and the addition of new tee complexes and forward tees will also take place.

“We look forward to the opportunity to restore many elements of the Plantation Course and implement a few ‘refinements’,” said Bill Coore. “It’s like when you have a special piece of art, or something really special to you, and you get a chance to dust if off and make it new again. This will be a very thoughtful restoration and refining process, but it’s not a redesign. We are very happy with the way the course looks and the way it has gone through the past nearly three decades.”

Other elements of the work include the redesign and modernisation of the Kapalua Golf Academy practice facility.

Coore and Crenshaw will be working alongside Kapalua operator Troon’s design, development and agronomy team, as well as Mark Rolfing, a television personality and long-time resident of Maui.

“All of our upcoming enhancements are geared toward improving the overall golf experience for our guests, while also ensuring the Sentry Tournament of Champions remains a top stop on the PGA Tour,” said Alex Nakajima, general manager, Kapalua Golf & Tennis. “We’ll be excited to show off the newly refined Plantation Course to those playing in the tournament in January of 2020.”
