Plans for the development of a new golf course in Australia have been approved.
To be known as The Cliffs, the new course will be created on a 600 acre site on Kangaroo Island, which lies approximately eight miles off the coast of the mainland in the state of South Australia.
The design of the new course has been drawn up by Darius Oliver, who helped with the design of another Australian course – Cape Wickham – which opened on King Island in late 2015.
Oliver has worked with the South Australian Government to gain approval for a revised golf course routing close to the island’s Pelican Lagoon, after an initial proposal for a course at the site was approved in February 2016. These initial plans were originally drawn up by Programmed Turnpoint Group in association with Greg Norman’s design company.
However, Oliver and his Kangaroo Island Links firm took over the project last July, and a new plan for the course has now been negotiated and approved.
The new design is more sympathetic from an environmental standpoint, and an area of woodland will be saved.
The construction element of the project will be led by Andrew Purchase, who led the construction of Cape Wickham.
“Like on King Island, the golf site at Pelican Lagoon has tremendous natural potential and is ready made for great golf,” said Darius Oliver. “The vast majority of holes are just sitting there on the ground, and will require little more than clearing, grassing and some light shaping. While the golf along the cliffs is stunning, I believe the inland holes to be at least as good, and arguably the most interesting on the course. Being able to create such a fun layout on Kangaroo Island and along such a beautiful stretch of coastline is a real thrill. Golfers from all corners of the globe are going to fall in love with this place. There isn’t anything like Kangaroo Island anywhere in the world.”
As well as the golf course, a significant resort and residential element will also be created on the site.
An official construction schedule and further golf course design announcements are expected in due course.
