Another new golf course has opened in Scotland. The Earl of Mar course, at the Mar Hall resort near Glasgow, made its official debut on 3 May. The £3.5 million course was designed by Dave Thomas’s practice.

The course is located on a raised shingle beach spanning 240 acres of the historic Mar Estate on the banks of the River Clyde. Construction began in 2007 and was completed last autumn. General manager Neil Ellis said: “We had intended to open the course last September, but the owners took the decision to let it mature a little longer.”

The 6,500 yard par 70 course includes two par fives and four par threes. During construction, a total of 13,500 kg of grass seed was planted and a 90 cubic metre reservoir was created adjacent to the eighteenth tee. The USGA-spec greens have been designed to withstand up to two inches of rain per hour.
