Golf course architecture firm Spogárd and VanderVaart is overseeing the construction of nine new holes at Langesø Golf Club near Odense, Denmark.

Following the project’s completion, the club will be home to 18 holes, and Philip Spogárd described the site as ‘perhaps the best for new holes I have seen in Denmark.’

Architect Spogárd spoke to GCA exclusively about the project.

“The topography is reminiscent of Sunningdale or the Red Course at The Berkshire, but the soil doesn’t allow for heather,” he said. “The design work started back in 2012 and we started construction on the project in July 2013. We hope that in the not too distant future we will renovate the bunkers on the existing nine holes as well.”

Six of the nine new holes are routed though a mature forest, which has meant the project has been somewhat delayed since original plans were made, as permission has taken more than four years to acquire. The land is also part of Langesø Castle, a historic Danish manor house and tourist attraction.

The project’s contractor is Greenmakers by Nelson & Vecchio, a firm with vast experience constructing courses across northern Europe and the Mediterranean. The course is expected to open in 2014.

“It is great working with a client who cares about every inch of the land and knows it will pass on to future generations,” added Spogárd. “I have no doubt it will be one of the top courses in Denmark once completed.”
