Well, we thought that the magnificent Royal County Down course in Northern Ireland, Sandy’s haunt in the last issue of GCA
would be quite an easy one for our gopher-spotters to recognise; it was, after all, named the best course in the world earlier this year by
Golf Digest. Maybe it was the particular photo we chose that proved hard to figure out, but either way we had a fairly small entry for the last Gopher Watch competition. So it was an XS-sized hat that we used to draw the winner. Nevertheless, South African-born, Canadian-based golf architect Paul Jansen was first out of the hat and wins the GCA golf shirt.
This month, Sandy moves inland, but to a classic old course that is often judged the finest work by its legendary architect. As the hole in question was regarded by that architect as the best on the course, does that make it his very best? Let us know if you recognise it, by email to
gopher@golfcoursearchitecture.net.
