Dye Designs overhauls bunkering on 1964 Cobb layout in South Carolina Lowcountry

Fripp Island Golf & Beach Resort, set on a barrier island along the Atlantic coast of South Carolina’s Lowcountry, has reopened its Ocean Point course for play after a renovation led by Dye Designs.

The club has two courses, the Davis Love III-designed Ocean Creek course and Ocean Point, a George Cobb layout that opened in 1964. Dye Designs was appointed to oversee the renovation of Ocean Point in April 2024, with construction beginning in June.

The redesign by mother-and-son architect team of Cynthia Dye McGarey and Matt McGarey involved reshaping more than 50 bunkers and adding 11 new greenside bunkers. New fairway bunkers were also incorporated into the design.

“Ocean Point epitomises the best of the Lowcountry golf, something my family knows well,” says Matt McGarey, senior design associate at Dye Designs. “We enjoyed partnering with the Fripp Island Resort to bring about a more modern playing experience that capitalises on the unique Lowcountry elements– all with an eye toward the intent of Mr Cobb’s original design.”

Construction, which was handled by Golf Course Services, included the creation of five-and-a-half acres of waste area. Numerous tee boxes were also added or levelled, and native dunes were constructed to increase the course’s visual appeal.

The final phase of the renovation will involve the introduction of more than 13,000 native plants.

“We are delighted to work with the world-renowned Dye Designs Group team to bring our shared vision for Ocean Point to life,” said John Scappatura, chief operating officer of Fripp Island Golf & Beach Resort. “The end result has exceeded our expectations, and we are confident that our members and guests will enjoy this refreshed layout that offers a fun and rewarding experience through our beautiful Lowcountry surroundings.”
