Fazio rebuild for PGA National

Florida's PGA National Resort and Spa plans to open its new Tom Fazio II course in November.

The course is a complete renovation of the former 'Haig' course, named in honour of Walter Hagen, and designed by Fazio's uncle Tom, and his uncle George. The original routing remains intact, but the rest of the course has been changed.

Total green surface has increased from 1.5 to 2.5 acres, grassed with TifEagle ultradwarf bermuda. Tees and fairways have been changed to Celebration bermuda, and the course has been lengthened to more than 7,000 yards. However, in support of the increasingly popular Tee it Forward initiative, a set of front tees has been added, allowing the course to be played as short as 5,100 yards. An entirely new irrigation system has also been added.

“We think the appealing aspects of the Fazio are the newly reconfigured greens, tee-boxes and bunkering; achieving that ideal balance where single-digit golfers will be fully challenged while higher handicaps will have a layout ideal for a day of enjoyable resort golf,” said Fazio.
