Clayton, DeVries & Pont starts redesign of RCG Vista Hermosa in Spain

Frank Pont, partner at Clayton, DeVries & Pont, has started redesign work on the nine-hole course at Real Club de Golf Vista Hermosa in Cádiz, Spain.

The Gonzalo Lavin Sr layout opened in 1975. Subsequent renovation work, home building and tree growth has affected strategy on several holes.

“Vista Hermosa is a fun and interesting course,” said Pont, who with colleagues Mike DeVries and Henrik Hilgert has developed a renovation plan for the course. “It has an intelligent routing with great variety and makes optimal use of limited space and topography. That said, there are several areas where it can be improved.”

The first phase began in mid-January with the redesign of green complexes on the third and fifth holes. The redesigned greens will be larger, with “classic contours and varied run-offs”. Shaping work is being undertaken by Lowie Bussemakers, with Cugargolf as the on-site contractor. This first phase of work is expected to open for play before Easter.

Mike DeVries said: “Vista Hermosa’s site is an architect’s dream as it is blessed with being located on pure sand. Although there are space constraints that will need careful consideration, I am very confident that we will be able to renovate the course in an imaginative manner.”
