Calcot Park appoints Clayton, DeVries & Pont to develop course plan

Calcot Park Golf Club near Reading, England, has appointed Clayton, DeVries & Pont to develop a long-term plan for its course and advise on renovations.

The golf course – designed by Harry Colt, with the assistance of John Morrison – opened in 1930 and is laid out around a Georgian mansion on the site of what was originally Tilehurst Manor.

“Although perhaps not quite as well known as some of Mr Colt’s other courses in southern England, Calcot Park has all the hallmarks of his prowess,” said Frank Pont. “It has beautiful green complexes and its four short holes are up there with some of the very best in his repertoire. I am very excited to have been asked to help restore the course and am confident that my colleagues and I will be able to enhance it significantly in a manner that will be respectful of its architectural heritage.”

Edward Cartwright, CDP’s head of operations for the UK & Ireland, said: “Given his immense experience in renovating and restoring courses designed by Harry Colt and his partners, Frank Pont will act as lead architect for this project. Indeed, Calcot Park will be the thirty-first Colt course in Europe and the US to which he will be providing his expertise. His dedication to rigorous and detailed research allied with a profound knowledge of Colt’s work delivers courses which are more fun to play, more pleasing on the eye and respectful of their origins. Mike Clayton and Mike DeVries will be assisting with this project as and when needed.”

Calcot Park’s general manager Michael Deller-Merricks said: “We’re delighted to be working with Frank, Edward and everyone involved at CDP. Our ambition is to be one of the top 100 courses in England and this is the start of an incredibly exciting journey for the club. I have no doubt that with CDP’s wealth of knowledge and expertise in restoring Harry Colt courses, we will be able to achieve our goal within the next 10 years.”
