Bunker and green renovation work gets underway at Wellingborough GC

A new project focused on renovating the bunkering and green surrounds at Wellingborough Golf Club in Northamptonshire, UK, has commenced.

The club was formed back in 1893, and the original nine hole course at Wellingborough was designed by Old Tom Morris.

Wellingborough GC hired Swan Golf Designs to carry out an assessment of the bunkering in early 2015, with William Swan of the firm working with the club since then to prepare a bunker redesign and reconstruction project to begin.

Following discussions with the club’s membership, the details of the project have now been agreed and work is underway.

The plans calls for 41 new bunkers, comprising a combination of completely new bunkers or renovated and rebuilt existing bunkers. 16 bunkers are set to be removed from the course as part of the project.

Green surrounds will also be reshaped with the aim of creating more interest around the putting surfaces.

The project’s main contractor is FJ Lovell Landscapes, and work is expected to take between 10 and 12 weeks to complete.
