Bobby Weed in progress with renovation of Long Cove Club
Construction is in progress on the Bobby Weed Golf Design renovation of the golf course at Love Cove Club in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, USA.
The project marks Weed’s return to the club where he began his golf design career, having joined Pete Dye’s team for the original design and construction of the course in 1981.
“Long Cove was my first assignment with Pete and the genesis of Bobby Weed Golf Design,” said Weed. “After having met him at Amelia Island Plantation in the mid-70s, Long Cove was the beginning of my career in design and construction and of my nearly 40 years relationship with Pete.
“To be back at Long Cove is very special for Bobby Weed Golf Design and to me personally.”
All bunkers and native waste areas are being refurbished, with new drain lines, sand and coquina shell material, and greens and fairways are being re-grassed with new varieties.
Additional work includes replacing corroded metal lake connectors and drain lines, reconstructing original bulkheads using the original 1981 design details, repair and overlay of cart paths and selected tree removal and landscaping.
The 7,000 yard par-71 course at Long Cove Club, a private residential community, plays among saltwater marshes just a few miles north of Dye’s famous Harbour Town layout. Contractor MacCurrach Golf started construction in April and the project is scheduled to be completed in late August, for a reopening in early October 2018.
For the original design, Weed and Dye assembled a crew of college graduates, interns and low-handicap golfers, many of whom – including Tom Doak, PB Dye, Scott Pool and Ron Farris – went on to forge successful careers in golf design.
