Andrew Green nears completion of US$5m renovation of Eisenhower

Andrew Green is nearing completion of a $5 million renovation of Eisenhower golf course near Annapolis, Maryland.

The renovation of the 18-hole public layout includes the removal of all bunkers for greater sustainability.

When visiting the course for the first time, Green said: “I saw so many fun shots using the character and topography already there. And I thought we could do something special here, and don’t need bunkers. There will be plenty of interesting and engaging holes for strategy and ‘trouble’ without sand. Each shot is special; it’s not a course with a bunch of thoughtless swings. Giving something no one else has will excite golfers.”

Green has also worked with the Anne Arundel County watershed protection and restoration program on a stream restoration and storm water management project, which has seen the revised layout increase wetlands by more than 13 acres.

Several holes have been lengthened or shortened, and there are now different sightlines from fairways to greens. There are five sets of tees and the course is playable from 4,700 to 7,100 yards.

The course now features native fescue and strategic mounding for visual appeal and strategy. Fairways have been grassed with Bermuda, while greens have been grassed with bentgrass.

Other work has included expanding the driving range, creek restoration and a new state-of-the-art irrigation system.

“We are fortunate to have the creative eye of Andrew Green directing the course transformation,” says Damian Cosby, Anne Arundel County’s chief of park maintenance and golf operations. “The result will be a beautiful course with immaculate conditions that doesn’t require the fuel, equipment, sand and labour needed to maintain a traditional layout.”
