WELCOME RICHARD HUMPHREYS As regular subscribers have come to expect, the January issue of Golf Course Architecture is accompanied by GCA Green Pages, our guide to the businesses that can help golf clubs and developers to plan and execute new golf course projects. In this 2025 edition, we have more than 70 organisations listed in our supplier directory and, before that, a series of articles that highlight some of the work that several of these have completed over recent years. We profile projects in at Royal County Down in Northern Ireland, Terras da Comporta in Portugal, Baltusrol in New Jersey, La Grande Mare on the island of Guernsey and The Country Club of Florida. These stories underline how important it is for golf clubs and developers getting the right people in, at the right time. Identifying a suitable architect, contractor, irrigation firm, bunker specialist and/or other experts can be the secret to a project’s success, and has arguably become more difficult in recent years as golf development market has grown and good suppliers are in high demand. The supplier directory section of GCA Green Pages – available here in print and online at www.golfcoursearchitecture.net/greenpages – is designed to help you identify businesses that could be right for your project, and provide everything you need to establish contact with them. A list of suppliers organised by the type of service they offer begins on page 23, and is followed by an alphabetical section of full company descriptions and contact details, beginning on page 27. I hope you find this guide an informative and valuable resource, and wish you all the best for your golf projects in 2025 and beyond. Secret to success 1

TORO Nestled within the Murlough Nature Reserve, Royal County Down Golf Club stands as proof of the natural beauty of Northern Ireland’s landscape. Renowned worldwide, it is consistently celebrated as one of the greatest golf courses ever designed. However, maintaining its traditional links conditions while embracing modernity poses unique challenges. For the club’s team, ensuring the greens and fairways remain firm and true to their heritage is a priority. This goal led them to Toro and Reesink Hydro-Scapes, resulting in one of the UK’s most ambitious irrigation projects. The club’s irrigation system, originally installed in the late 1990s with a Toro CDS control system, had served well for over two decades. However, technological advancements and the need for even more precision called for an upgrade. David Morgan, the club’s secretary, noted the dual responsibility to conserve water while maintaining the course’s legacy: “We have a social responsibility to manage our water usage, as well as an obligation to the course and our members to present it as a traditional links course.” Revamping the system meant aligning it with modern standards while minimising environmental impact. The existing 1990s double-row fairway sprinkler layout had water frequently applied to rough and unmanaged areas, so basically where it was not wanted or needed. However, the polyethylene mainline pipework remained in excellent condition and could be incorporated into the new design. Further complexities arose from integrating three new holes added to the Annesley Links over the past decade. This integration required revising the entire system layout to ensure optimal coverage and efficiency. Specialist irrigation designer Adrian Mortram crafted a design centred entirely around Toro technology. Key components included the Toro Lynx LSM control Preserving Irish links with modern solutions Royal County Down has modernised its irrigation system with Toro technology to maintain its traditional links course and conserve water. 8

system, which provided unparalleled control over water application. This system allows adjustments down to the second, supports high-speed communication, and offers diagnostics to ensure efficiency. Distributed Lynx Smart Hubs facilitate control across the courses, enabling the operation of up to 250 Lynx Smart Modules per path and reducing the watering window. “The Lynx story goes from strength to strength, and we are delighted to transition Royal County Down from SitePro CDS after many years of reliable and dependable service to our flagship Lynx LSM control with all the associated modern benefits of precision, high speed diagnostics and full mobile access," said Simon Squires, senior sales manager at Toro. Toro Infinity valve-in-head and Flex Series sprinklers were also crucial to the project. The Infinity sprinklers’ fully top-serviceable design minimises future maintenance impacts, allowing access to critical components without disrupting the course. This innovation ensures a longterm reduction in maintenance costs and downtime. The upgraded system has redefined irrigation practices at Royal County Down. Advanced technology now enables the club to irrigate larger areas while using less water and fewer resources. The redesigned sprinkler layout ensures water is only applied where necessary, eliminating waste and optimising course conditions. The main goal of preserving the traditional links conditions while future-proofing the course was achieved. With Toro’s cutting-edge irrigation solutions, Royal County Down continues to be a beacon of excellence, harmonising tradition with innovation and proving that sustainability and quality can go hand in hand. CJW GOLF INTERNATIONAL Contractor CJW Golf International has completed renovation work at a host of top UK clubs in 2024 while also continuing with construction on a new 18-hole project in Portugal. The Portugal project is the new Torre course at Terras da Comporta, with the design attributed to Sergio Garcia. The resort already has one golf course, the Dunas, designed by David McLay Kidd. CJW Golf’s scope of work at Torre has included earthworks, all detailed shaping, greens construction, the installation of a Toro Lynx irrigation system, grassing and grow-in. The course will feature Tahoma 31 on tees and fairways and Pure Select on greens. Construction work was completed in August and in December, CJW Golf handed over nine holes to the client. By March 2025, the back nine and range will be handed over in preparation for a soft opening in June 2025. Work on the Torre course has coincided with the Dunas, also built by CJW Golf, receiving the ‘World’s Best Golf Course’ accolade at the World Golf Awards that were held in Madeira, Portugal. Meanwhile, in the UK, CJW Golf has undertaken projects at Walton Heath, Elie, New Zealand, Verulam, Royal Ascot and Monifieth. At Walton Heath in Surrey, the contractor completed extensive tee renovations, built a new driving range tee and A trusted contractor CJW Golf International has been busy working at a host of top courses across Europe in 2024. 10 CJW Golf is underway with renovation work at Monifieth Golf Links in Scotland Photo: CJW Golf International

enhanced the green surrounds on both the Old and New courses. While for Elie, near Fife, Scotland, renovation work has coincided with the club’s 150th anniversary, with CJW Golf helping with the construction of 16 new revetted bunkers and new tee pads that have been introduced to add distance and new angles to the course. Work at Verulam in Hertfordshire has included the building of 21 bunkers with new rubber liner and sand; and at Royal Ascot in Berkshire, CJW Golf worked with architect Bruce Weller to improve playability of bunkers and improve turf conditions around the second, seventh and eighth holes. In early November, CJW Golf began work at Monifieth Golf Links, located near Carnoustie and across the bay from St Andrews, on what will be a multi-year project to reinstate strategy and variety. Changes will include rebunkering, creating runoff areas, as well as relocating tees and greens. “Monifieth will be an exciting project for us over the next couple of winters,” says Conor Walsh of CJW Golf International. “The aim of these works will be to bring back strategy by repositioning bunkers, removing some bunkers and creating greenside runoffs. The topography on the links is phenomenal and unique! The team have already started to progress with these changes, which should help bring back strategy and encourage the ground game once again.” For more on CJW Golf International, turn to page 37, or visit www.cjwgolfinternational.com 11 The Torre course at Terras da Comporta will open for preview play in June 2025 Photo: CJW Golf International

Located in Springfield, New Jersey, Baltusrol Golf Club has a history that few clubs in the world can match. The Upper and Lower courses, designed by AW Tillinghast, have hosted 19 major championships and will stage the PGA Championship in 2029. “In 1918, the club hired Tillinghast to develop the first dual courses in America – which are now our Lower and Upper golf courses,” said Matt Wirths, co-chair of Baltusrol’s restoration committee. “It’s been very important that Baltusrol maintains that legacy and leadership within golf.” It was the need to protect this history that led the club to take the step of restoring both courses, returning them to the original vision of Tillinghast’s design. Gil Hanse was appointed in 2018 to create a long-range masterplan for the restoration, while Greg Boring, director of grounds at Baltusrol, took the lead on delivering the project. “We’d lost that true AW Tillinghast design and feel,” said Boring. “Everybody that was involved, and every piece of technology we put in the ground, was extremely important to us as we aimed to reclaim the designer’s original intent.” One of the most important elements of the restoration identified by the club’s membership was the installation of a new, modern irrigation system. The existing system for the two courses was only capable of supplying 1,800 gallons of water per minute, which was insufficient to maintain the conditions the club was aiming for. “Irrigation is really the backbone to having a properly conditioned golf course,” said Wirths. “It’s something we felt was critically important to the success of both the Upper and Lower restorations.” To achieve its conditioning goals, the club wanted to supply more water to the courses, remove satellites and satellite houses to create a clean look, and to have the ability to diagnose any issues quickly and easily. “In the new system, we were looking for something that was going to be easier to use, provide us more flexibility and be more efficient,” said Shawn Haverdink, superintendent of golf courses at Baltusrol. Those requirements led the club to choose Rain Bird as the supplier of its new irrigation system. The system is capable of reliably delivering up to 4,200 gallons a minute to anywhere on the courses. RAIN BIRD Conditioning history Baltusrol has installed a Rain Bird irrigation system as it restores its historic Upper and Lower courses to their original vision. 12 The Rain Bird irrigation system can be managed by the grounds team via a smartphone or tablet Photo: Rain Bird

“We’ve opened up vistas and corridors throughout the entire property,” said Boring. “We have so much more availability and flexibility with our Rain Bird system now.” Rain Bird’s CirrusPRO Central Control system allows Boring and his team to streamline irrigation management across the more than 4,000 rotors on the two courses, allowing them to micromanage water and create detailed programmes in response to changing conditions. The rotors themselves, which are a combination of Rain Bird’s 752 and 952 models, are also suitable for managing Baltusrol’s large putting surfaces. “These rotors are a product that has stood the test of time,” said Boring. The Rain Bird Integrated Control (IC) System also enables Boring’s team to manage the irrigation of the courses from a phone or tablet, rather than returning to the computer at the maintenance facility to diagnose any issues. “Having control at the touch of your fingertips while you’re out in the field looking at things has been a game changer for us,” said Boring. “We can go out in the field and adjust heads in real time. The IC System gives us diagnostics at our fingertips.” The Lower course reopened for play in 2021 and hosted its first major championship since the restoration, the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, in June 2023. Work on the Upper course began in early 2024 and will be completed in spring 2025. “When we made this decision to restore these golf courses, it was monumental,” said Boring. “We weren’t going to get another opportunity to do this over again. We had to get this right. We had to make the correct choice. And I think we nailed it.” For more on Rain Bird, turn to page 56, or visit www.rainbird.com/golf 13 Baltusrol completed the renovation of its Lower course in 2021 and work on the Upper course began in early 2024 Photo: Rain Bird

Approximately 120 miles due south of Poole, England, sits the Channel Islands, where two of the islands – Guernsey and Jersey – have been a focus for MJ Abbott’s construction and irrigation teams in 2024. On Guernsey, we have installed a replacement Toro fairway irrigation system for both Royal Guernsey and L’Ancresse Golf Club. Along the coast at Vazon Bay, La Grande Mare Golf Club is being redeveloped by European Golf Design. Originally a hotel and timeshare resort, this very short and compact course on tidal flood land has been lengthened and rebuilt with USGA greens, comprehensive new drainage infrastructure, increased lake areas with timber sleeper perimeters, a new Toro irrigation system and large sandcapped approaches and surrounds. A new driving range and short-game practice area has also been constructed. Weather and ground conditions on Guernsey proved challenging. Choppy conditions in the channel disrupted machinery and deliveries of materials, which mostly had to come from ports on England’s south coast. Sand came in bulk deliveries, transported and stockpiled at Shoreham before loading onto 1,800-tonne barges and shipped to the port on Guernsey, before being offloaded and transported to the site. The clay- and peat-based subsoils also became incredibly unstable in inclement conditions and could only be moved effectively in drier weather. On Jersey, we are back at La Moye Golf Club where we last worked in 2012. Clay capped areas are being MJ ABBOTT Building on the Channel Islands Steve Briggs of MJ Abbott talks about the work the contractor has been executing at golf clubs on Guernsey and Jersey. 14 MJ Abbott has been working with European Golf Design on the redevelopment of La Grande Mare on the island of Guernsey

removed to improve fairway conditions on the tenth hole, and two new holes are being constructed on land next to the existing thirteenth and fourteenth holes. It has been a stark contrast in terms of the conditions we encountered with the clay and peat on Guernsey. The team is enjoying the contrast and not having to keep an eye on every weather app. The original Rain Bird irrigation system is being extended to incorporate the new holes and for speed of recovery on fairway areas. Hollow cores are being collected and spread on new fairways in conjunction with conventional cultivation and seeding. In a significant advancement for turf management, Lynkz Zoysia – a high-performance Zoysia variety developed by a BladeRunner breeding programme – has been introduced to the Asia golf market by Sports Turf Solutions. Previously identified under the trial name BRG-2, Lynkz Zoysia underwent a comprehensive three-year testing process in Vietnam and Thailand. Throughout this period, it consistently outperformed leading turf varieties such as Lazer, Primo, Trinity, P-110 and TifEagle. Lynkz Zoysia stood out for its exceptional texture, speed and low-maintenance requirements, needing significantly reduced water, pesticides and nutrients, which contributes to its sustainability in turf management. In the three years of testing, we haven't seen any sign of disease at all, which is unheard of. One of the standout qualities of Lynkz Zoysia is its remarkable resilience. Trials conducted under severe monsoon conditions demonstrated an impressive resistance to disease – an exceptional result that underscores its suitability for the challenging climates found across Asia. Lynkz Zoysia is uniquely durable and adaptable to the Asian environment. We are confident that it will become a go-to choice for golf courses aiming for high quality while minimising maintenance efforts. SPORTS TURF SOLUTIONS A grass game-changer Brad Burgess of Sports Turf Solutions discusses the benefits that Lynkz Zoysia, a new grass variety, can bring to golf courses in the Asia market. 16 Photos: Sports Turf Solutions Sports Turf Solutions conducted trials of Lynkz Zoysia in Vietnam and Thailand to assess how well the new grass variety performs in an Asian environment

With installations already in place at six golf courses in the Philippines and Cambodia, Lynkz Zoysia is quickly gaining recognition across the region. In response to the increasing demand, Sports Turf Solutions is significantly expanding its turf farm operations in both Vietnam and Thailand. We have commenced construction on a cutting-edge turf farm in Malaysia, further enhancing our capacity to meet the needs of the market. This new facility will support both new golf courses and renovation projects, as well as lay-and-play sports fields throughout Asia. Further expanding its portfolio, Sports Turf Solutions has also acquired a license for the new Tif 3D bermudagrass from the University of Georgia. During a recent tour in the USA with Dr Brian Schwartz, we saw that interest in Tif 3D has been growing throughout the southern regions due to its enhanced colour, density, disease resistance and overall stability – key qualities of this new bermuda variety from Tifton. 19 GEORGE GOLF DESIGN Lester George has completed a second renovation at The Country Club of Florida near Boynton Beach, USA. The club’s Robert Bruce Harris-designed course opened in 1957 and was remodelled in 1987 by Arthur Hills – he kept to the original routing but made the holes more “dramatic in style”, according to the club. George directed a renovation in 2006, which focused on deepening and enlarging ponds and lakes, and increasing the number of bunkers to make the course “more visually striking and challenging”. However, the contours of the course have since changed over time – they have becoming smaller and losing their shape, with as much as 12 inches of organic material having accumulated on the putting greens and greenside bunkers. To fix this, in 2024, George worked with golf course construction firm Aspen Corporation, director of agronomy Jeff Kontz and his son, Jeffrey, the golf course superintendent, to rebuild all greens and bunkers to match George’s work from 2006. They used GPS survey data taken from detailed photos of the course. George also added seven new tees to lengthen the course to 7,087 yards. TifEagle bermudagrass was installed on greens, with the green surrounds covered in TifGrand bermudagrass, with the new grass cut at a low-mow height. Drainage was also added to the entire course, including 900 new irrigation heads. The project also included the reconstruction of the club’s driving range and short-game practice facilities, featuring a new two-bay golf performance centre and a new nine-hole reversible par-three course (pictured) for younger players. Perhaps it is no coincidence that it started from the ‘ground up’ as that is essentially the essence of its design philosophy. Having played the world’s best golf courses as a touring professional and having gained an understanding of the ability of the everyday player as a teaching professional, Bill Bergin not only feels the quality of a golf course through his feet, but he also judges the character of his course designs by how well they play on the ground. Bergin Golf Designs’ golf courses are, without question, demanding for the best golfers yet fun and fair for the majority of golfers who step onto the first tee. Considered a reverent restorer of classic courses, Bergin Golf Designs’ restoration portfolio includes renovations of Tillinghast, Raynor, Langford and Ross courses. While honouring the roots of each renovation project, BGD modernises courses with today’s technology, environmental stewardship and best maintenance practices. Along with his design associates and an in-house golf course superintendent, Bergin offers design and construction supervision services for new layouts, renovations and practice facilities. Complementing the design services, BGD utilises the latest technology when establishing topographical information and creating visual graphics, and assists clients with grow-in and agronomical issues. Bergin, a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, knows golf and loves golf. He and his team create outstanding courses enjoyed by golfers of all levels.

33 Better Billy Bunker PO Box 93 Hermitage TN 37076 USA Contact: Todd Jenkins Tel: +1 615 847 8877 bbb.todd@live.com www.betterbillybunker.com The Better Billy Bunker method is the best bunker construction method in the world. This method improves the original Billy Bunker specification by eliminating geotextile liners. A two-inch lay of local pea gravel is treated with our polymer designed specifically for use in bunkers. This layer of gravel provides maximum drainage and allows water to flow to the drain tile faster than any other construction method. The method drains over 1,500 inches of water per hour, greatly reduces washouts – even on steep bunker faces, eliminates silt contamination, has a 10-year guarantee, creates playable bunkers whatever the weather and is not only affordable, but contributes to huge maintenance savings. “Let us show you why hundreds of golf courses worldwide have made the switch to Better Billy Bunker,” says Todd Jenkins of Better Billy Bunker. “Whether you are preparing for a major championship, or your club championship, we are committed to providing the most playable and maintenance friendly bunkers possible! Our clients will tell you – Better Billy Bunker works.” Bimini Bethel Farms 8780 NW Bethel Farms Road Arcadia FL 34266 USA Contact: Cherie Velez Tel: +1 863 494 3057 cvelez@bethelfarms.com www.bethelfarms.com Bimini bermudagrass is a premium variety known for its durability, lush appearance and ability to thrive in diverse environments, making it a top choice for high-end golf courses.
