Golf Course Architecture - Issue 65, July 2021

41 The cover story of the latest issue of By Design magazine – produced for the American Society of Golf Course Architects by the team responsible for GCA – showcases several projects where a ‘less is more’ approach to golf course design has been adopted. “We’re all trying to do more with less,” says Drew Rogers. “As golf course architects, we certainly have a responsibility to play a part in achieving balance in design, and many times, it’s the simple approach that is the all-around winner.” The Summer issue of By Design also pays tribute to Arthur Hills, who passed away in May 2021. His long- time colleague Steve Forrest says Hills was “a distinguished professional practitioner and humble gentlemen”. By Design learns more about Hills and his career from those who worked with him. Golf course superintendent Stefano Allevi has led the project, with the goals of improving playability and reducing the amount of fertiliser, water and fungicides required for maintenance. An interseeding programme has introduced two varieties of bentgrass from Tee 2 Green: Pure Distinction and Crystal Blue Links. “Pure Distinction is the ultimate bentgrass for smooth and true putting greens,” said Agostino Gaude of Greenmasters. “It features dense, upright and aggressive growth, with an exceptional ability to compete against poa annua. “Recognisable by its stunning bluegreen colour, Crystal Blue Links features a semi-erect growth habit, aggressive recovery and great disease resistance, adaptable to a wide range of conditions. It performs exceptionally well in shady areas. “An interseeding programme has great value for all golf courses around the world, thanks to the fast germination and ground coverage of these new bentgrass varieties, it will become a great success story anywhere.” The club was founded in 1928 with eighteen holes designed by James Peter Gannon and Cecil Blandford, with a nine-hole layout added by Giulio Cavalsani in 1958 and has hosted nine Italian Opens.
